What We Recommend Asking When Comparing Flooring or Tile Quotes!

We recommend making sure you are comparing apples to apples when comparing flooring or tile quotes and not apples to oranges. 

We suggest doing this by asking what's included and what you still need to buy. For example most flooring installers include nails, glue and wax paper in their quotes for hardwood installation. However, some don't and their quote could appear lower then others until you find out they are expecting you to buy those things making the cost more than expected. Some contractors are doing this to trick people into thinking their quotes are lower. Sometimes different contractors just include different things and it's not a scam but anyone not including nails in their quote is a red flag. 

An example of differences in quotes that's not a scam: we include the cost of marble for anyone getting a niche because we like to make sure we purchase the correct sizes of Marble and not every contractor does this. We do have it written in our quote this is included. It's not written in our quote that we include nails that's why we feel it's important to ask what you are expected to purchase so you have an accurate idea of the final cost and no costly surprises along the way. 

We also recommend you make sure you are comparing for a completed job and not just parts of it. Some contractors don't include transitions, caulking or baseboards in their quotes and some do. Some contractors won't caulk baseboards and then you have to find someone else to do it. 

Summary of what to check if is included in the quote:

Transitions - that they are included in the price and that they are colour matching them. For Hardwood they may need to order stain to match your floor. Some companies may install unstained stair nosings and transitions and leave you to stain them. 

Hardwood - glue, nails and wax paper(not all floors need wax paper). Transitions as mentioned above. 

LVP & Laminate - underpad or vapour barrier if needed. Transitions as mentioned above. 

Tiles - tile edges, mortar and grout. Any Marble needed for Niches etc.

Baseboards - caulking them. If they are removing and reinstalling them. Does it include touch up paint?

Prep work- is prep work included like levelling or demolition?

Disposal of old flooring and tiles.
